In just two hours on Saturday morning 3000 people signed the Chester Conservative's Petition to save the walls.

A recent report publicised by local Tories showed that the walls were in an appalling state.

“What we want is the re-introduction of a funded maintenance programme that the current Lib/Lab Alliance abolished,” said spokesman Pamela Hall. “We had stalls at eight locations around the city on Saturday morning and people were queuing up to sign.”

Although the campaign was run by the Tories, it was non-party political. The campaign's website has had over a thousand hits in the past week attracting people of all political affiliations.

“I have never been asked to help secure European funding for the walls and having seen the shoddy condition they are, in I will help if asked. The walls are a great asset and I commend this campaign.”

Pamela Hall concluded: “Since we launched the campaign the council has promised cash for the walls but we will hold them to account. The walls have got into this state under their watch and the people want them restored.”
