"Blair to blame for Beef Ban", says local Euro-MP"

Local Conservative Euro-MP Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Atkins has slammed the latest confirmation by France that the ban on British Beef will not be lifted despite the ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) last December that France was acting illegally.

Speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, he said:
"I have written to the Commission urging them to use the powers they already have to place a punitive daily fine on France, backdated to the day of the Court ruling."

"I have also called on the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers to issue a fast-track procedure for such law-breakers. There are currently 1500 cases before the ECJ, many of them from France. It is time there was a level playing-field, that countries signing up to EU laws should not be allowed to flout them with impunity."

"In this particular case of British Beef, if Tony Blair had been tougher with France in the first place the issue could have been over by now. He has a lot to answer for."ENDS
