North West Beaches

"Excellent news for the North West" declared Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Atkins MEP (North West) on hearing that Blackpool's beaches have at long last been given a clean bill of health by the EU.

"I was the Environment Minister (1995) who encouraged and supported North West Water and local authorities in their implementation of the long-term clean-up programme" he commented, " and, bearing in mind the vital importance of this stretch of coastline to the region's tourism industry, this could not have been a better pre-Christmas present for local people."

"It has taken a long time and cost many millions of pounds but it will be worth it if we can attract yet more holidaymakers to Blackpool, Lytham, Southport and Fleetwood."
