Atkins on West Cumbria Jobs Visit

On Wednesday, 19th July, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Atkins, North West MEP will be at Whitehaven in Cumbria to meet Phil Short and other members of the West Coast Fishermen's Association at The Beacon Centre at 12 noon.

"There are huge problems in the fishing industry", commented Sir Robert, "in terms of livelihoods, the environment and the sovereignty of our waters. I want to hear from the men and women who know their trade and its difficulties and who can tell it like it is."

Following that, Sir Robert will travel to Workington to discuss recent job losses at the Anglo-Dutch Corus Group Rail-making Plant with ISTC Convenor, Alan Smith, currently Mayor of Allerdale, at Allerdale House at 3.00 p.m.

"The potential and actual unemployment prospects in Cumbria are serious," he said, "and the difficulties being experienced at Corus, BNFL, and other plants throughout the county and elsewhere in the North West give the lie to Labour's claims to have the interests of our region close to their hearts. The high pound and high transport costs are but two obvious causes of the problems for industry and Labour talks big but does nothing. All mouth and no delivery - as usual!"
