Curtain Must Come Down On Strasbourg Traveling Circus

As Parliament votes on a temporary committee on climate change, the two-seat farce continues to pump 20,000 tons of CO2 into our atmosphere

Strasbourg, April 25th — Conservative MEPs are backing a new report published today further exposing the environmental costs of the European Parliament’s two-seat operation.

Last September one million people had signed up to halt the monthly commute, which, according to the report, commissioned by the UK’s two Green MEPs, produces emissions equivalent to the carbon dioxide produced each year by the entire population of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the West Indies.

Sir Robert Atkins MEP, Deputy Conservative Leader in the European Parliament, says: “Having a second parliamentary seat effectively means pouring millions of pounds paid by British taxpayers down the plughole and such nonsense destroys voters’ trust in the EU.

“There is nothing in Strasbourg that we don’t already have in Brussels and to be voting on environmental issues when we continue to have to uproot every month with thousands of extra road, rail and plane journeys is nothing short of ridiculous today.

“Last month the EU agreed a target of cutting emissions by 20 per cent by 2020. The Parliament needs to get its own house in order or risk sending the wrong signal to people and businesses affected.

“It is incredible to learn today for example that cleaners turn the lights on in a room in the Parliament to inform colleagues following that the room has been cleaned.”

He added: “Conservative MEPs have been at the forefront of the campaign to reform the EU. British taxpayers expect reform to begin by having one seat only in Brussels.”
