Atkins Calls for an end to dog-fighting in the EU

Brussels 21st November - Conservatives are sponsoring a Written Declaration in the European Parliament which calls for an end to dog-fighting in the EU.

Dogfighting is an illegal barbaric sport in which two dogs specifically bred and trained to fight are placed in a pit to fight each other. The game ends when one or both dogs can no longer continue. Proof exists that an international ring has been established. Pet passports obtained for the dogs often misconstrue the real breed of the animal - some owners make their own passports using simply a computer and a printer. This allows dogs to freely circulate with their owner on the international scene.

Sir Robert Atkins MEP, Deputy Leader of the Conservative Delegation in the European Parliament said:

“Dog-fighting is uncontrolled and vile. It must be stopped and the criminal sadists who participate in the practice must be pursued to the full extent of the law.”
