World Canals Festival Gala Dinner

Brussels June 15th - Former Waterways Minister and now North West Tory MEP, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Atkins, was one of the Guests of Honour at the World Canals Festival Gala Dinner in Liverpool this week and declared his firm support for the Inland Waterways Association campaign to “Save Our Canals”.

Sir Robert commented:

“By cutting the budget of British Waterways, the infrastructure, the maintenance and the future development of this vital leisure amenity is being threatened by the present Government” “and all as a direct result of Margaret Becket’s cock-up of the Single Farm Payment scheme which provoked a raid on other funds within DEFRA. Whilst we are seeking ways in the European Parliament to encourage the greater use of waterways, the Labour Government is doing its best to damage them”, he continued. “We must use every means to win this fight, not just to restore the budget cuts but to achieve an increase in funding to match the demands of an expanding canal network.”
