Re: Missed opportunities
Date: 17 September 2003

Sir - The collapse of the trade talks in Cancun has meant that both developing and developed countries have missed out on an opportunity to promote world economic growth. While the rich countries should be prepared to reform radically their subsidies in agriculture, the poorer nations should be willing to compromise on the Singapore Issues, which would lead to greater stability for companies making overseas investments.

My Conservative colleagues and I will be pressing Pascal Lamy, the EU trade commissioner, on how he will overcome these issues during his coming visit to the European Parliament so that all parties will be able to return to the negotiating table to deliver real results in the near future.
