More protection against Timeshare and Holiday Club scams

Conservatives welcome new EU proposal to reinforce consumer protection

Brussels, 06 June 2007 — The European Commission has today adopted a proposal to update consumer protection laws on timeshares and other long term investment plans such as holiday clubs. It will now be sent to the European Parliament for review.

Sir Robert Atkins MEP, Deputy Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament, welcomed the new proposal:

“We have been calling for a revised Directive covering products like holiday clubs, which escaped the original Directive. The new law is also clearer and simpler for consumers; it further safeguards their rights of withdrawal and settlement to a “cooling off period”. A potential investment that looks bright in a sunny holiday resort becomes less alluring in the cold light of a return home.”
