Atkins Presses the Case for Tourism
The Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Atkins MEP for the North West region and Conservative spokesman on Tourism, pressed Commissioner Liikanen - responsible for Tourism - at a recent meeting of the Regional Affairs Transport and Tourism Committee of the European Parliament to do more to destroy the "Cinderella" image of the fastest - growing industry in the UK.
"For too long tourism has been forgotten or ignored by various Governments throughout the EU and the detrimental effects of some EU legislation ill - considered by the Council of Ministers and the Commission. We do not want more interference, more regulation and more bureaucracy" said Sir Robert "but we do need a proper data base, proper evaluation and monitoring of all regulatory proposals and better training resources for those working in the industry".
"Tourism has the capacity to provide more jobs and focus greater attention on attractive parts of Britain and rest of EU but it is driven by entrepreneurs, family enterprises and innovative small companies" concluded Sir Robert. "It needs support, encouragement and co-ordination and Conservative MEP's will fight the corner for British tourism in the European Parliament at every opportunity".
