Sir Robert Atkins MEP has been appointed the Conservative Spokesman on Transport Tourism and Regional Policy in the European Parliament.

The Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Atkins MEP has been appointed the Conservative Spokesman on Transport, Tourism and Regional Policy in the European Parliament. He has been invited to take on this important task by the Leader of the 36-strong Tory Group, Edward McMillan-Scott, and will lead a team of five Tory MEP's on this influential Committee in Brussels. He will liaise directly with the appropriate Shadow Cabinet Ministers and play a part in the formulation of Party Policy in these areas. "I am delighted to take on this task in subjects that have such relevance to the North West Region, " commented Sir Robert. "Tourism is a huge industry here with the Lake District, seaside resorts, rolling countryside and historic cities. Transport facilities are vital in all aspects and, of course, regional policy has serious implications for the whole of the North West." Sir Robert pointed out that the Conservative Group in the European Parliament is the second largest delegation in the dominant Centre-Right grouping and thus will have considerable power and influence over the workings of all Committees. "We can act as a serious counterweight to the excesses of Euro-Socialism and its uniquely incompetent British variant," declared the MEP, "thus demonstrating the growing authority of the European Parliament and its ability to protect the best interests of British citizens". Sir Robert is a former Minister for Industry (responsible for Regional Development), Transport (Roads and Traffic) and Tourism (as Northern Ireland Minister of State). He also serves on the pre-eminent Committee in the European Parliament - Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy.
