Some worries have been mentioned to me about a threat to Charity Shops from a Directive concerned with Product Safety & Consumers Rights. Clearly the volunteers working at these popular outlets cannot be expected to be legally liable as stipulated in the Proposal, so Tory MEPs have tabled an amendment which would exclude the shops from the Directive's provisions. Now we must get it accepted.

What an excellent Party Conference in Bournemouth. There was much to enjoy, not least the first-class NW Reception, and also the Country Fair, which featured Pendle Conservatives and their full-sized model sheep. (You must ask them where it came from!) Many of our Parliamentary Candidates were on parade, in one form or another, and an impressive team they make. I shall be playing an active part in their Campaign when it comes and am giving whatever support possible in the run-up to the General Election.

Incidentally, it is worth being proud of the fact that the National Lottery and the Foundation for Sport & and Arts were created by John Major's Government and, without those financial resources, our Olympians would never have achieved such stunning success in Australia.

I spoke at the NW Conservative Clubs Conference the other day and a pleasure it was to be with the stalwarts of so many Club Committees. I emphasised to them how important they are in providing what is sometimes the only Tory presence in an otherwise non-Tory area and what a significant part they can play during the General Election. They can also advertise the services of their NW Conservative MEPs!

A welcome visit to Strasbourg from Altrincham & Sale Tories, together with a visit of students from Runshaw College, Leyland, last session. It is good to see Constituents from all over the region coming to the Parliament, especially if they are our friends and supporters.

A number of Constituency calls this month, including Council By-Elections in Chester and Lancaster, and other activities in Lancaster & Wyre, Congleton, Blackpool North & Fleetwood, Westmorland, Crewe & Nantwich, South Ribble, Preston and Manchester.
