Save our Tourist Industry

Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Atkins, MEP for the North West and Conservative Spokesman on Tourism in the European Parliament, today called on the Government to put together an urgent compensation package for rural tourism in Britain.

"It is bad enough for the farmers to be suffering as a result of the scourge of Foot-and-Mouth Disease but the tourism industry is being hit very hard as well" he commented. "In my own region (North West), the Lake District would normally be preparing for the Easter influx but there is little or no chance of that this year."

"I am making urgent representations to Commissioner Liikanen, on behalf of my Constituents and the rest of Britain, to seek any assistance that he can give, but this matter is a subsidiary one and largely under the control of individual Member States" continued Sir Robert. "The British Government cannot stand idly by and let the good name of Britain abroad be sullied to the huge detriment of tourism, which is losing £100 million per week as a result of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and other concerns. Chris Smith must negotiate a compensation package for rural tourism with Chancellor Brown NOW."
