Trades Union Leaders from various North West plants of BNFL paid a special visit to Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Atkins MEP to thank him for his Parliamentary efforts in defeating the attempts to ban the transport of nuclear materials.

The Trades Unions were in Brussels to lobby Commission officials on behalf of their industry and comprised the Chairman of the Springfields Joint Shop Stewards' Committee, the Secretary of the Trade Union Campaign for the Nuclear Industry and other officers.

"I appreciated the courtesy very much" commented Sir Robert, "and it made the job of defending those who work in this most important North West industry all the more worthwhile."

Sir Robert had successfully tabled a series of amendments designed to wreck a Report from a French Green MEP which would have banned or severely restricted the transportation of any nuclear material. It would also have posed a threat to Britain's nuclear deterrent.
