Atkins Demands Commission Leadership in WTO Talks

The Rt. Hon Sir Robert Atkins, MEP for the North West and Principal Conservative Spokesman on Trade, again pressed Commissioner Lamy on the need to resolve the impasse in World Trade negotiations following last month's collapse of discussions in Cancun, Mexico.

Questioning the Commissioner at the Industry Committee last Thursday (2nd October), Sir Robert said, "Cancun was a disaster for the Third World and not hugely helpful to British interests. If world trade is not to be bogged down in sterile posturing and petty bickering, it is essential that the EU exercises the leadership necessary to make effective progress.
